If you passed your driving test after December 31st 1996 you have to take a course and DSA test before you can drive any vehicle above 3.5t in weight. You will also have to take a course and DSA test if you wish to tow a trailer behind a vehicle (B+E licence), if you passed your driving test after this date.
If you are towing a trailer or driving a vehicle over 3.5t (and you passed your driving test after 31st December, 1996), you are driving illegally and therefore uninsured. Your vehicle, passengers and horses are at risk - and you will lose your driving licence if you do not have the correct entitlement.

Types of Licence

There are three main licence categories which horse owners will be required to gain, these are based on the size and style of your horsebox.

'B+E Licence' - this is required if you wish to tow a single horsebox behind a normal car.

'C1 Licence' - this is required if you wish to drive a purpose built horsebox of no more than 7.5t in weight (fully loaded)

'HGV Cat C Licence' - this is required if you wish to drive a purpose built horsebox that weighs more than 7.5t, loaded or unloaded. If you gain your 'Cat C Licence' you will automatically be entitled to drive a C1 vehicle too.
