Due to the council’s wrath at travellers settling in the area, HGV drivers might have to face a complex coding entrance system at a Bogner Regis HGV park. The Western Arun Area Committee has agreed to investigate whether barriers (which will need a code to open) should be installed in the London Road coach and lorry park so as to prevent travellers gaining access. During a meeting in October, it was decided that coaches and lorries would not be banned from the parking site using a height barrier. Instead, HGV drivers might have to enter a code. Nevertheless, it might be difficult for HGV drivers to use and therefore remember certain codes in order to enter the area itself.

Rampley, the manager of infrastructure at the Road Haulage Association, was more than keen to point out how problematic and difficult the scheme could be. In addition to that, he says:

“Drivers may not be able to access a code – and this would cause frustration. Besides, who is going to issue codes and how? I think they are making life complicated for themselves.”

Furthermore, a spokeswoman for Arun District Council says that the technical aspects of the system have not (yet) been discussed in detail. However, it was indeed confirmed that the parking area would not be made smaller so as to create extra car spaces for the University of Chichester.
