Cannon shuts transport arm
An official statement recently announced that Abingdon, Oxfordshire-based Cannon Group, has shut its transport and distribution operation, and is blaming the collapse of a major customer for the closure itself.
In spite of all the efforts made to save the business, Cannon was obliged to notify the staff that their positions were redundant, which was certainly not an easy task for Cannon, since the staff had been nothing else but hard-working and loyal.
By clearly stipulating the reasons and pinning down all the facts, the statement says:
“Affected staff were notified that their positions were redundant, as efforts to save the business had failed. The board deeply regrets the necessity to take this action, as well as the implications to the many loyal, long-serving staff.”
Nevertheless, no redundancy figures were available, which made matters even worse for Cannon. However, the Cannon Group is licensed for 336 trailers and 143 HGVs. In addition to this, Cannon initially operated from two different sites in Abingdon, Knottingley, and West Yorks. Plus, it owned Coventry-based Oldhams Transport, which was licensed for 46 HGVs. Apart from all that, Cannon also runs a packing and logistics operation. Allegedly, this (Cannon) packing and logistics operation is still continuing to trade while it looks for a potential buyer.
