In spite of the fact that the HGV Theory Test may vary according to the Training Centre and Programme you opt for, it is still a test that you have to pass in order to be given a Professional HGV Driving Licence. Although the form of the test may vary in terms of your location, or the Training Centre’s location, the content of it is generally the same. Basically, the HGV Theory Test consists of two different sections; one of which is a multiple-choice section while the other is a ‘Hazard-Perception’ section.

The multiple-choice section features HGV-related questions with multiple answers. Normally, you would choose one of these answers (per question) and the one you select is considered your answer to the overall question. Nowadays, with all the technology available, the HGV Theory Test is widely being conducted on computer-touch screens as an easier and more comfortable alternative to the standard paper-and-pencil tests. As to the multiple-choice section, you’ll be given a practice test before the actual test.

On the other hand, the ‘Hazard-Perception’ section of the HGV Theory Test is somewhat different from the multiple-choice section. How different? In many ways it is very different. This section is said to include watching videos in 3D – and ‘looking out’ for potential hazards on the road, as if you were driving on it yourself. Hence, your ability to spot potential risks and dangers – from the slightest details to the most obvious road hazards – will be tested (and marked!) according to your overall attentiveness.
