Apparently, Eddie Stobart has won a distribution contract for Tesco’s brand-new 910,000ft purpose-built import centre at Teesport, Middlesbrough. The agreement, worth in the region of £25M annually, will see firm Stobart move the bulk of Tesco’s non-food products to various distribution warehouses and centres throughout the UK.

Andrew Tinkler, Chief Executive of Stobart Group, says:

“This major new contract is aligned to Stobart’s multimodal strategy, and gives us the potential to increase most movements from road to rail. I think this is an extremely important time for both firms and we all look forward to collaborating, especially now that we’ve won the contract.”

Spokespeople for Tesco have revealed that by relocating the firm’s existing facility from Coventry to the North-East, Tesco will cut the number of journeys it makes by 12,000 per year. In other words, goods arriving by ship go straight on to trains, due to the on-site rail infrastructure. Next, they are transported to various distribution sites.

Tinkler concludes:

“Tesco and Stobart started working together nearly five years ago, and both organisations share a vision of maximising load fill, so as to reduce ‘empty’ road miles, plus provide a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution. HGV distributing, combined with a few other methods of delivery, will most definitely prove effective.”
