The requirements to be an HGV driver
Potential HGV drivers have to be twenty one years of age and have to have a regular UK licence. You need to decide between the two classes of licences available which are the ‘C’ and the ‘C+E’ licenses’. A class C licence will allow you to drive any heavy goods vehicle which is 7.5 tonnes or over. On the other hand, if you think you want to drive a larger vehicle with an attached trailer, you may want to obtain the C+E licence, which will enable you to do that.
There is a theory test which needs to be taken. This test will be like other UK driver’s licence tests and will require you to take a look at video clips and recognise hazards when you see them, reporting them by clicking. This test will be out of 75 and 50 is the pass mark. The practical test will be a 90 minute test and will consist of hands-on driving.
So if you have been looking for a life on the road and think you have what it takes to be an HGV driver, this is the profession for you.
