How to get an HGV licence
If you are looking for secure, well-paid employment with flexible working hours then you should consider HGV driving as a career option. There are many benefits of driving a heavy goods vehicle, such as the opportunity to travel all over the UK and Europe.
Even in this period of recession, the demand for HGV drivers is very high. Newly qualified drivers are offered a generous starting wage which increases according to years of experience.
So, if you are interested in becoming a HGV driver you need to know about the training required in order to get your licence.
HGV licence requirements
HGV licences are divided into two types: C and C+E. The class C licence is for a vehicle weighing over 7.5 tonnes, whereas a class C+E licence allows the licence holder to drive a larger vehicle with an attached trailer.
You need to be at least 18 years old and hold a standard driving licence before applying for a class C licence. After you have acquired this and are over 21, you can then apply for a class C+E licence.
Lastly, there are some medical examinations which include routine eye and body check -ups. These are important, as you need to be in good health to become a HGV driver.
