Weight of HGVs to be reduced with new technology
November 8, 2009Heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are used to carry large loads of items between factories, depots and warehouses, as well as other services. Hence, it requires capable and reliable HGV drivers to be in control of the vehicles at all times.
HGV drivers have to be smart enough to control the huge vehicle to avoid accidents and other mishaps. At the same time they often have to be able to perform accurate manoeuvring to deliver goods to various locations, such as retail stock rooms.
However, recently it was reported that there will be a reduction in the weight of HGVs. The innovative technology from Volvo which is to be used to minimise the weight of HGVs is still currently under development. The aircraft division of Volvo has developed the new technology, which is expected to reduce the weight of HGVs by up to 20% with no cut down in payload.
It is said that the new technology will still take approximately 10 years time to fully enter into the haulage industry. The HGV market is waiting for the new technology to enter the market as it will not only reduce the weight of HGVs but also reduce emissions and running costs.
The technology still has a number of issues, but HGV drivers can still save their running costs by opting for cheaper HGV insurance. The new technology will lead to better driving without the fear of accidents due to the heavy weight of HGVs.
