Police to safeguard HGV drivers from criminals
Police officials have finally come up with stringent laws to deal with miscreants who target innocent HGV / LGV drivers. Such individuals target drivers parking their HGVs in susceptible locations.
Police officials implemented several steps in the beginning of 2009 to deal with such miscreants and since then, the number of attacks has reduced considerably. In the month of February, police officials dealt with 15 cases of robbery pertaining to HGV / LGV drivers who were assaulted or threatened. However, the number of attacks dropped after several measures were implemented by the West Midlands Police Authority.
The raised awareness of crimes against HGV and LGVs has also meant that drivers are now paying more attention to police warnings and are avoiding parking the vehicles in poorly lit areas. Police officials are optimistic that measures to increase HGV driver training will reduce the number of assault offences.
According to Detective Andy Parsons, the head of the HGV crime initiative, the incidents in February made them realise the seriousness of the situation.
The Central Motorway Police Group also launched a ‘ParkWise’ DVD this October, which is currently being used as a part of a cross-continent campaign to protect HGV / LGV drivers against crime.
