In order to reduce the congestion of traffic on the A12 in Essex, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) wants HGV / LGVs to be restricted to the inside lane.

However, this suggestion of the FSB has been declined by the Road Haulage Association (RHA). The RHA has disagreed with the FSB as they think the congestion would get worse instead of getting better.

Chairman of Essex FSB, Iain Wicks said that it would be better if HGVs and LGVs are limited to the inside lane. However, he admits that commonsense needs to be used. He went on to give an example by saying that if a tractor is on the inside lane, it is obvious for a truck to overtake it.

The FSB said that they will put forward their point about this restriction through the A12 Alliance. The A12 alliance is an association between the County Councils, Highways Agency and the FSB itself.

The director of communication of RHA, Kate Gibbs said that the problem of congestion would increase particularly at major junctions. He said that most HGVs and LGVs don’t use the middle and outside lanes anyway. HGV / LGV drivers use these lanes only to overtake.
