If you are planning to work as an HGV / LGV driver, and have no experience or qualifications in the field, here are a few tips:

HGV Training

You will need to complete a series of specialised tests before you can legally drive an HGV / LGV. These are designed to prove that you can competently drive and manoeuvre the vehicle, as well as operate any machinery and equipment that is attached to it.

As many HGV / LGV come equipped with forklift trucks, you may be required to learn to drive a forklift before passing your HGV / LGV training.

Tests

You must already have a full driver’s licence before learning to drive an LGV / HGV.

You will have to sit another, specialised theory test, which includes:

• Vehicle loading and unloading
• Dealing with accidents
• Weight and dimensions
• Driver’s hours and rest periods

After your theory test has been passed, you can take your Practical HGV Test.

This will tells your skills and ability in:

• Handling and manoeuvring the vehicle
• Being able to gauge distances and understanding the capabilities of the vehicle
• Understanding the size and implications of the blind spot and any other features of the vehicle
• Your competence at adhering to speed limits, road laws and other rules of driving

There are many specialised HGV / LGV training companies which will help you to pass your test, so be sure to do some research before starting your new career!
