HGV / LGV driving apprenticeships are a great way of learning to be an HGV driver. HGV training is of course essential if you want to become a qualified HGV driver. And apprenticeships are a great way to do this.

As part of an apprenticeship, the time spent will be divided between working with experienced colleagues and time spent getting qualifications at college. This will lead to NVQs and professional recognition from recognised driving bodies.

In the past apprenticeships were only available for school leavers, but the new adult apprenticeships are now becoming increasingly common.

The Young Drivers Scheme lets employers employ 18 year olds and fully train them in road transport operations while they progress towards attaining a full HGV licence. This works really well for 18 year olds because if it were not for this scheme, they could only get an HGV licence after they turned 21 years of age.

HGV training and attaining an HGV licence needs to be undertaken via a formal course of instruction. And, as such, any person who wants to start a career as an HGV driver needs to attend a course before they are allowed to drive an HGV.
