R Swain and Sons, a Rochester-based haulier, have announced strong results for 2009, despite the general financial problems during that period.

Turnover was down £3.2m to £22.6m and pre-tax profit was down to £41,647 from £96,527. The directors pronounced themselves satisfied with these results and point to an increased market share.

R Swain acquired Charles Hewitt and H&M Plant during 2009 and began to offer a wider range of services as a consequence. The annual report says that this was achieved without a major impact on cash flow.

R Swain’s Transit Medway division felt the impact of the downturn in the construction industry, however, as it greatly influenced the volume of timber being imported, which led to a loss for this part of the company.

The report predicts modest improvement in 2010 and the company has therefore carried out a cost review in all areas of its business in order to minimise any losses that might be incurred.
