Which licence do I apply for?

There are 2 categories of HGV licence: Category ‘C’ and Category ‘C + E’. The main difference relates to how the vehicles are built.

Category C

A Category ‘C’ vehicle is known as a ‘Rigid’ – the vehicle is all one unit and easier to handle. These vehicles are also known as ‘Class 2’.

Category C+E

A Category ‘C + E’ vehicle is known as an ‘Artic’ (short for Articulated Lorry). These vehicles have a separate cab and trailer and are therefore a little more complicated to drive. They are also known as ‘Class 1’ vehicles.

Get these licences after attending a 5 day course

New drivers must first pass the Category ‘C’ test before doing Category ‘C + E’. Many people go for a back to back course where they get their Category ‘C + E’ licence immediately after they have passed the Category ‘C’ course.
